For LinkPad this week, I thought I would look at some of the latest thinking on trade and prosperity.
First up is an opinion piece by Dr. Simon Pimstone, founder, president and CEO of Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc. Xenon is the largest privately-held innovative biotechnology R&D company in British Columbia. Dr. Pimstone argues that the Canada EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) currently under discussion places Canada at a "Trade and prosperity crossroads." He argues that Canadian patient health and health system sustainability are supported by a strong IP system and that the CETA offers Canada an opportunity to expand beyond resource extraction.
Next up is a piece published yesterday by Andre Picard looking at a recent Conference Board of Canada Report on Health Care in Canada. The report seeks to better understand how health care acts as an economic engine in Canada. The authors note that a great deal of policy debate focuses on health outcomes and cost containment, but that the flip side of the economic benefits often are omitted.
