Health Minister Rona Ambrose addressed the North America Consumer Product Safety Summit in Ottawa this week. Minister Ambrose highlighted the actions that the government has taken to address unsafe consumer products in Canada, including the introduction of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act in 2011.

Minister Ambrose has also recently stated that she wants to make ending family violence a priority as Minister of Health. Ambrose, who was recently the minister for status of women, identifies family violence as an important public health issue, which she plans to champion in her new role. In her speech to the Canadian Medical Association, Ambrose highlighted some of her ideas, which included reviewing the Family Violence Initiative, a coordinated effort lead by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The Canadian Diabetes Association announced the appointment of its new President and CEO, Rick Blickstead. Blickstead comes to the CDA following 11 years as CEO of the Wellesley Institute. The Wellesley Institute is a research and policy think-tank focused on population based health research. Blickstead will lead the CDA in its mission to "help people with diabetes live healthy lives while working to find a cure".
